Why Bridal Sizes Are Different Than Your Everyday Clothing
One of the common concerns I hear from brides is:
“I can’t believe what size I had to order my gown! Why is the sizing so different than my normal clothes?”
If you’ve asked yourself that question, you’re not alone. The great news is, there is no reason to worry-this is completely normal.
Bridal sizing is very different from everyday clothing. Even everyday clothing sizes can vary from designer to designer (just think about trying to find a good fitting pair of jeans). Wedding gown designers often use size charts that haven’t changed much over the years, while most clothing brands have updated their sizing over time. As a result, the number on your wedding gown label often differs from the size you normally wear.
Your Measurements Matter More Than the Number
When you order your wedding gown, your bridal consultant takes a few measurements, usually your bust, waist, and hips. Your measurements are then compared to the designer’s size chart to determine the best size to order.
The truth is most brides don’t fall perfectly into one size. Your bust may correspond to one size, your waist another, and your hips yet another. This is very common and completely normal.
Most bridal boutiques will order the size that accommodates your largest measurement, especially if your measurements span more than one size. This follows the designer’s sizing guidelines and provides the best starting point for professional alterations so your gown can be tailored for a beautiful fit.
Don’t Focus on the Tag
The size printed inside your wedding gown or on the order invoice isn’t a reflection of you. It’s simply a number used by the designer.
Trust me- I have to remind myself not to focus on that number on the tag, too. It’s easy to let a number on a tag affect how we feel, but it doesn’t define your beauty or your worth.
What truly matters is how your gown fits, how comfortable you feel and how confident you are when you walk down the aisle.
